Artist

Joy Pitjara was born in Boundary Bore, Utopia. She is the daughter of well known artist Glory Ngarla (deceased) and sister to very famous Anna Price Petyarre. Born in famous artist family, Joy learned working with batik in her early age from her mother and later started painting on canvas with acrylic paints. Using a fine dotting technique with subtle shades of colour, Joy depicts the stories such as the Bush Tobacco Plant and Yam Dreamings.

Dreaming

Joy is best known for her Bush Yam Dreamings. She uses natural colours of the earth that are found in the Utopia region where there are several different types of yams and the connection between the yam and the ceremonies and songs is explored in the paintings in different ways by different artists.
